On 29 and 30 November 2018, Sail Labs, a member of the EUROSINT Forum, organized a workshop in Vienna. This event gathered almost 100 participants from public organisations (BBC News lab, universities), NGOs (Red Cross Austria, FIBEP) and the industry around the topic of fake news and other artificial intelligence challenges for the news media in the 21th century.
This event explored how AI-powered technologies can help news organisations safeguard the truthfulness and trustworthiness of their sources, stay in control of the news gathering and delivery process and empower their newsrooms, their journalists and, ultimately, their readership.
The presentations given by speakers offered complementary perspective on possible mitigation technologies and strategies regarding fake news. Participants agreed that fake news can be weaponized as part of hybrid warfare, and that despite the development of technological means to expose fake news, it is still consumed by large audiences.
Thorough exchanges with the audience and networking opportunities provided some interesting perspectives on AI-related issues which could be tackled during future EUROSINT Forum activities.
