On 6 and 7 April 2017, the EUROSINT Forum and Sail Labs organised a workshop in Vienna. This event gathered about 40 intelligence practitioners and experts in Vienna around the topic of terrorism and digitisation.
This workhops aimed to discuss the use of social medias and Internet for influence, disinformation and propaganda campaigns by terrorist groups and State actors. In a era of information deluge, LEAs and intelligence bodies therefore need to be even more aware of the further increasing opportunities brought by Information Technology, both from a technological and conceptual level.
The presentations given by speakers from both the academia and the private sector helped participants increase their awareness of state of the art knowledge and tools to address this evolving threat landscape. Disinformation and propaganda methods are as old as mankind but the near instantaneous and massive spread of digital information facilitate risks of information alteration and bring more challenges to intelligence analysis.
